Avalon spoilers

[ENG] Since Merlin is out I began to work on the sequel to it. Actually it's not exactly a sequel since the main character is not Merlin anymore. I work on this book all alone (text+illos+layout). The codename is Avalon, and it will also be published by Soleil. I'm still writing the story but I've already begun to draw in order to keep my imagination fueled, and also to keep the envy. I don't resist to share a couple spoilers here ;)

[FR] Depuis que Merlin est sorti je me suis remis au travail sur le tome qui va lui succéder et que je réalise seul (texte+illus+mise en page). Le nom de code est Avalon et il sera aussi édité chez Soleil. Je suis en phase d'écriture avancée, mais je commence déjà à peindre pour me sexifier un petit peu et garder le feu sacré sur le projet. Je ne résiste pas à vous montrer deux petits spoilers:

Kekai Kotaki-ish speedie

here's a not so speed painting (3hrs maybe) I did last night. Hard to sleep these days, thinking about the story of my next book Avalon.



Not too much to say about this battle piece since i didn't think about it too much. It just came out of my mind this way, and I have to admit it looks a bit too much Kekai Kotaki-ish. Anyway I love this guy's art so I'm not surprised I got inspired, even though unwillingly.

taschenrechner

ok, to celebrate my shiny new blog, here's the piece I did for the Venus Robotica exhibition at the Cabinet des Curieux gallery in Paris. It gave me the opportunity to do something that isn't fantasy illustration, which doesn't happen very often. The image name is Taschenrechner in reference to the famous Kraftwerk robotic song. But I also injected a fair amount of the kind of abstract art I'm influenced by: cubism, futurism, Sonia Delaunay, Moholi-Nagi, Malevich...



Exceptionnally I did a pencil sketch for that one. Here it is:

Blog new version

[ENG] as you may have seen, I changed my blog address to a new one. The ancient one was hosted in my website, and I wasn't able to get the new functionnalities of Blogger. So I decided to switch to a new one. The bad part is that I lost my archives in the process, but I suck so much at html and that kind of stuff that I had no other choice. Anyway, let's look forward dammit !!

[FR] comme vous l'avez peut-être constaté l'adresse de mon blog a changé. L'ancien était hébergé sur mon site et ça m'empêchait d'accéder aux nouvelles fonctionnalités de blogger. Du coup j'ai switché. Le seul problème c'est que ça fait perdre l'accès aux anciens posts. Mébon, c'est pas grave, il vaut toujours mieux regarder vers le futur pas vrai ?!!

Edit: seems like I finally managed to import my archives. Cool !

Venus Robotica II

the Venus Robotica exhibition in Paris is such a success that the Cabinet des Curieux gallery decided to add a few more pieces to it. I'll be part of the robotic fiesta with a brand new digital piece that comes with its pencil sketch. I'm not showing the image for now, all I can say is that it's named Taschenrechner, in reference to the Kraftwerk track I love so much.

In parallel to the Venus Robotica exhibition I'm part of in Paris, I decided to record this vid. I begun with the idea of drawing a robot face, and then I let my mind go as he wanted to see what happens.
This is not a speed painting demo because I don't go to a finished piece. The art was done with the Alchemy software, allowing a lot of random marks and shapes, that influenced my decisions all along the process. I just painted over and over, mark upon mark, simply following what the random shapes suggested.

Melancholia exhibition

For once I'm not going to talk about my own selfish person. Well, actually about my better half instead !
If you pass by Paris this November, you need to wander by the L'Art de Rien Gallery in the quartier Montmartre, where you can see a beautiful exhibition of the romantic art of Agata Kawa. Alongside with artists Benjamin Lacombe, LiliDoll and Christophe Goussault. If you like the 19th century victorian era, the freaks, and children books, you won't be disappointed at all.
The gallery sells books, giclees, originals of many sizes and low prices most of the time.

Note that Agata Kawa will be signing her book Tigre le Dévoué at the Gallery the 5th of December.

Utopiales signing report

It was great meeting James Gurney & JB Monge at the Utopiales Festival in Nantes. James always has a pencil and moleskine in the hand, and he did Aleksi's portrait while we were talking about Merlin on the stage. He did mine while we were sketching each others books at the restaurant:

Seeing James Gurney's Dinotopia exhibition was an eye opener. He's a master of light and shadows, taking some of his inspiration in the orientalists movement. I've learnt a few tricks (that I can't wait to try!) only by looking at his paintings. The Dinotopia book is a must-have !

I also warmly recommend JB Monge latest Celtic Faeries book. The man got the Art&Fact award this year. Rght after the Spectrum award, this is your year JB !!

This was the last date of my Merlin Brittany tour. Only a handful days after St Malo. MERLIN was sold out after two days in every spot we landed, and we had a tremendous response to it from the people who bought it. So thank you very much for letting us know that spending 3 years on this one was definitely worth it.

Cabaret Vert

Je serai ce WE (29 + 30Août) à Charleville-Mézières en dédicaces au festival Cabaret Vert, en compagnie de mon acolyte Aleksi.

[ENG] Day - 2 before the release of MERLIN, the 112 fully illustrated pages book I did with my talented buddy Aleksi Briclot. You can already see a few pages in hi-res on our editor's website. I just received my copies this morning, and it was a shock I didn't expect. Imagine we're working on this baby for 4 years now, and see it in my hands is like someone extracted a bone from my chest.



I'm super excited by all the events to come in the next months. Stay tuned !

[FR] J - 2 avant la sortie de MERLIN le beau-livre de 112 pages entièrement ilustré par votre serviteur et mon vieux copain Aleksi Briclot. Vous pouvez avoir un avant-goût en haute-déf de la bête sur le site de Soleil.
J'ai reçu ce matin mes exemplaires auteur, et ça m'a fait un choc auquel je ne m'étais pas préparé. Un peu comme si, après 4 ans de travail, on m'avait ôté une côte et que je la tenais dans mes mains.
Il va se passer plein de trucs super dans les mois à venir, expo, dédicaces, etc... je vous tiendrai au courant.

Tigre le Dévoué

Tigre le Dévoué est un conte chinois du XVIIIè siècle revisité de façon délicate et magistraâAâle (et voilà, je m'emporte, fallait s'y attendre...) par Agata Kawa, avec un style qui n'appartient qu'à elle et dont je suis sûr qu'il sera bientôt copié à tour de bras ;) [mode promo off]

[ENG] [mode promo on] Here we are ! The book my lady did just hit the shelves recently. French text though. Tigre le Dévoué is an 18th century chinese tale revisited in a very delicate and masterful way by Agata Kawa. You need to have an eye on this book because she has a very unique style everyone will copy in a breath, that's for sure ;) [mode promo off]

Signing report (Salon du Livre 2009)

[ENG] a few doodles and photos done at the Salon du livre 2009 event in Paris. I had a handful of nice and relaxing hours with people. Nothing to sell on my side really, but my lady Agata was able to showcase her children book Tigre le Dévoué. And it had a lot of success !

[FR] une poignée d'heures à crobarder et à taper le bout de gras au Salon du Livre. Ambiance détendue, tranquilou les lapinous à dire des conneries sur Eddy mitchell avec l'ami Olivier Souillé ;) Moi j'avais rien à "vendre" (Merlin arrive, patience !) mais Agata, elle par contre, fêtait la sortie en avant-première de son livre Tigre le Dévoué. Il y avait un petit nombre d'albums à la vente; le temps de la dédicace ils sont tous partis ! :D

Juste un petit mot pour vous dire que je serai en dédicaces au Salon du Livre de Paris. J'y serai dimanche soir de 17h à 19h sur le stand de Bragelonne / Daniel Maghen.

watizit bit-lit ?

[ENG] I recently did a handful of covers for french editor Bragelonne, among which is my first bit-lit attempt for a novel by highly talented author Richelle Mead. The bit-lit genre is already a success over the Atlantic but here in France it only begins with Twilight the movie. I hope it will last a bit since I find so very refreshing to draw sexy vampires ;)
On top of that I really love what David Oghia from Bragelonne did with the graphic design of those covers. Here are some examples.

[FR] Tiens j'avais envie de partager les dernières couv' que j'ai faites pour Bragelonne. Parmi celles-ci il y a ma première couv' dans le genre Bit-Lit. La Bit-Lit est déjà un genre bien installé aux states mais en France ça démarre seulement avec le succès du film Twilight. Perso j'espère que ça va continuer parce que juste ça me détend de dessiner des petites vampires sexy ;) De plus j'ai vraiment beaucoup apprécié la mise en page des couvertures de David Oghia chez Bragelonne. Moi ça me donne envie de lire personnellement. Quelques exemples:
